1948 Bowman Basketball Card Set Checklist, Information
The 1948 Bowman Basketball set was issued in 2 series and totals 72 cards (36 in each series). This set is the first mainstream basketball set. The George Mikan rookie card is the key card in this set. This card is also in the high number series making it even rare and more valuable. George Mikan was the NBA’s first dominant big man and many rule changes were made due to his dominance. In 2015, a PSA graded Gem Mint 10 copy of his 1948 Bowman Rookie Card sold for more than $400,000 at auction. It is the only PSA 10 in existence and the price is the most ever paid for a basketball card. The set also features 12 PLAY cards which were cards with basketball plays (no players were on these cards). The set was not too popular at the time as Bowman never made any more basketball sets and another mainstream basketball card set was not issued until Topps issued one in 1957-58.
